Travelling in an electric car: the stage is set for the new Chargemap route planner!

They have been waiting impatiently for it. The Chargemap route planner comes with you on holiday! We are proud to present you the result of many years of work: a simple, intuitive tool, enriched with Chargemap data, to drive an electric car with peace of mind.

Planning a trip in an electric car

The journey in an e-car can be a stressor for many drivers. The density of charging infrastructures is still too low to keep pace with the growth in electric vehicle sales in recent years. It is difficult to leave without knowing in advance where and when to stop to recharge.

For years, we have been reporting the Chargemap Community about the various problems they have during long journeys with e-cars.

  • How can you be sure that you will arrive at your destination with enough range for the tourist activities?
  • When should I charge my e-car?
  • How long does it take to charge the electric car?
  • How can you be sure that the charging stations on the route are reliable?

Everyone has their own little tricks to enjoy a smooth ride in an electric car. But planning a trip with an EV is still time-consuming and often requires a combination of tools to get a route that actually sticks to the planned route.

That's why, over several months, the Chargemap team has developed a simple, intuitive and efficient solution to help you plan your e-journeys.

Chargemap, your travel companion for e-car journeys

You may already be familiar with the Chargemap route tool familiar. This makes it possible to visualize all available charging stations along a route.

After many requests from the Chargemap community, the team is proud to present a much more advanced tool today: the new Chargemap Route Planner!

Without further ado, let's go together through the different steps to Planning your next e-trip in the Chargemap App scout.

Set up your route

First, let's talk about the configuration screen. The goal of this tool is that it is easy to use, whether you are an expert or a beginner. This explains the little information that is requested before the calculation.

Set up your Chargemap route in a few seconds
  1. Specify your start and finish points, as well as the initial and desired battery level at the destination
  2. Enter the electric vehicle you are driving
  3. Customize the route by avoiding highways, avoiding tolls, or setting a speed limit to save energy
  4. Start the calculation!

Displaying Charging Stops

Once calculated, you can view the entire route with the required charging stop(s). At the bottom of the screen, you'll see the distance, total time, and number of charges required.

Find out about the details of the charging stations on your route

To see the route in detail, just tap on the map or a stage of the route. When the tool zooms in on a charging station, the algorithm displays some 'alternative' charging stations around the selected route by default. These were rated as relevant, but not as optimal charging stops. Of course, only those that are close enough for your vehicle to get there will be displayed.

The ability to replace a charging stop with one of these alternative stations will be available very soon. Stand by 😉

Access detailed data for each charging station on your route

From there, you can see the details of each suggested charging station. This way, you can see useful information such as nearby service facilities, comments and check-ins from the community, or even the rating of the charging network.

Check out the surrounding charging stations

As we've just seen, the algorithm shows a couple of interesting charging stations nearby by default. If you click on the small "eye" icon, you will find all available charging stations within a 10-kilometre radius of the route. This is exactly what you can already do with our basic route tool do.

Thanks to their different opacity, you can easily distinguish the stations maintained by the algorithm from all the others available on the route.

Ride off relaxed

Once you're happy with the suggested route, you can go straight to the first charging station using the "Go to GPS" option, which connects you to your favorite navigation application.

The Chargemap app is also available on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay availableIf your electric vehicle is compatible with one of these technologies, you will enjoy optimal navigation comfort 😉

The route planning feature is not accessible in the CarPlay/Android Auto version. But simply mark your charging stations on the route in the mobile app to find 😎 them directly on your dashboard

Behind the Chargemap route planner

This route planner presents a technological challenge. In fact, Chargemap decided to develop its own algorithm in-house by surrounding itself with a team of engineers entirely dedicated to the project.

In addition to finding the fastest route, our researchers have developed an algorithm that is fully adapted to the Chargemap mechanics. To select the charging stations on the route, our tool is based on Chargemap data. In this way, the information from the Contributions from the Chargemap Community, the availability of charging stations or the estimated charging time suggest the most suitable route in each case.

To sum up, the algorithm behind the Chargemap route planner evaluates the relevance of each charging stop based on the technical information of your vehicle as well as the data of each charging zone. For example, the tool prioritizes a charging zone that is well-rated, has no out-of-service charging stations, and has successful check-ins.

Chargemap route planner: ambitions and development prospects

You're starting to get used to Chargemap, but this first version of the route planner isn't fixed, of course. On the contrary, our team is already working on the next developments of the product!

Without giving an exact release date, the Chargemap team has big things in store for you.

Adjusting the route according to its calculation

Chargemap's ambition with this new product is simple: it must adapt to all the profiles of electric car drivers.

Even with a very successful algorithm, it remains difficult to suggest the perfect route that fits every driver profile and all situations. That's why we want to give every user the opportunity to customize the route according to their needs or desires.

Let's take a specific case. A user is planning to go on vacation with his family in an electric car. He wants to use a charging stop to picnic in a park he knows well and sees a charging station nearby.

Even if the Chargemap route does not include a stop at this location, they can specify the desired charging stop themselves. A new route is calculated, certainly less fast, but adapted to the user's situation.

Save/share a route

A future update will also provide the ability to save and share calculated routes. A very useful feature to compare several routes and return to them at any time.

A continuously improving algorithm

In addition to implementing new features into the tool, our researchers continue to refine the algorithm so that it is able to calculate increasingly precise and relevant routes.

This new Chargemap route planner is available from today by downloading the latest update of the mobile application. And because we wanted to share this tool with the whole community, it's completely free! 🎉

The entire Chargemap team hopes that many of you will take advantage of it to prepare your electric car holidays! We can't wait to see the trips you'll make this summer. 🚙

We would like to thank you for your support over the years. We work for you! Also a big thank you to all the Chargemap beta testers for their time and commitment. 💛
